Anger management explained

Many of us get cross, or angry with situations and with other people. It is a normal emotion and one that we use to express frustration. But when anger gets out of control and the cause and effect are not dealt with, it can become a serious problem. This may include uncontrollable anger, verbal aggression, physical aggression or self-harm. Anger may be a sign of strength or weakness or a sign of addictive behaviour.

Anger affects adults and children. Symptoms can be visible or invisible where some people express their anger privately through self-harm.

Some examples of angry behaviour are noted below:

  • Shouting and screaming in public (or in private)
  • Violence towards people in public (or items in private)
  • Abuse
  • Competitive behaviour
  • Self-harm.

Our approach to anger management counselling

Our approach to anger management classes is to consult extensively with the client, to understand the origins of the client’s anger issues and to start helping the client to deal with the side effects brought on by anger.

With anger management counselling, each person will have different levels of negative and positive feelings and there will be different therapeutic strategies and solutions for each client. During your anger management classes, the therapist will help you to realise and accept the anger issues you are experiencing, encouraging you to re-evaluate the negative feelings brought on by anger. Some of the root causes of anger issues are tied to underlying mental health conditions which may need to be addressed by the therapist before the anger management counselling can take place.

Once you have passed the initial consultancy stage with the therapist, you will learn to identify, respond and overcome the triggers for your anger issues. You’ll also learn how to communicate better with people around you in order to resolve tense situations without resorting to anger.

The anger management classes can be taken on a one-to-one basis or as part of a group. Anger management counselling can be effective to any age group, though our most common client’s are aged between 30 and 40. Usually when the toll of family and work stress becomes too much to cope with.
