Hypnotherapy can be a particularly effective treatment for fears and phobias, addictions, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive behaviour, stress-related problems such as insomnia, and pain management including during surgery and childbirth.

Hypnotherapy London

Hypnotherapy, is a branch of therapy that aims to alter the patient’s state of consciousness through the use of hypnosis. This method is able to utilize positive suggestion to help change aspects of yourself such as your behaviour and feelings. During your first session of hypnotherapy, the hypnotherapist will be asking you specific questions about your lifestyle and overall health in order for you both to decide on what your goals will be during the therapy.

While under hypnosis, a patient will exhibit enhanced awareness and responsiveness which allows the therapist to bypass the rational part of the brain to the more receptive subconscious and introduce new or more positive thoughts and perspectives. You will also be more open to suggestion so that together, we can introduce new thoughts and change behaviour.

How does hypnotherapy help?

Hypnosis is widely thought of as an aid to other therapies (such as psychotherapy) as most of the issues dealt with by placing the patient into a hypnotic trance are of a psychological nature. There are several different types of hypnotherapy and is something you should consider when planning to go for therapy.

Hypnosis can be used in two ways, as suggestion therapy or for patient analysis:

  • Suggestion therapy: This is the most common and general type of hypnotherapy. During traditional therapy, the hypnotherapist projects new, more positive thoughts and feelings into the receptive, subconscious mind of the patient allowing them to focus completely without any inside interference.
  • Analysis: Analytical hypnotherapy invokes methods and ideas from psychotherapy to help target deep rooted issues with the patient instead of merely tackling the symptoms of the issues as is addressed by other forms of therapy. When compared to traditional hypnotherapy, analytical therapy treatment usually lasts considerably longer and requires more input from the patient.

Cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy

This form of hypnotherapy combines the use of hypnosis, cognitive therapy and many other therapies which gives both the therapist and patient a large ‘database’ to consult with and create a unique, personal programme to the patients needs and wants. The process of cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy includes the therapist discerning the mind-set of the patient, and incorporating techniques to enable them to remove unwanted thoughts from their past and bring to fruition the changes that the patient desired to have.

What can hypnotherapy help with?

Hypnotherapy can have a positive effect for people who are struggling with emotional problems or anxiety. In many cases it also helps to aid those suffering from depression and stress-related illness. Some of the more common issues that hypnotherapy can aid with are patients that want help to stop smoking or to lose weight.

Hypnotherapy for smokers focuses on the negative aspects of smoking. It helps to break out of the routine they may have gotten into and also to help change their perspective of cigarettes in a way to make them less desirable to the patient.

In regards to weight-loss, therapy helps the patient to achieve a new relationship with both healthy food and exercise. People who struggle to stick to a diet or go through phases of “yo-yo dieting” can benefit from hypnotherapy to help them overcome the issues which prevent them from losing weight.

Hypnotherapy for anxiety is a very successful treatment and mostly reports high results. During the time you are in a heightened state through hypnosis, you will be able to focus on the root cause of your anxiety and training your mind the view the source of your anxiety in a different way. This is possible with an intensive session however it usually requires a few sessions with your hypnotherapist.

Cognitive hypnotherapy is a form of cognitive behavioural therapy so we use very, very similar sort of techniques although our objectives are very similar so we try to change people's behavioural and thinking patterns, the approach is just slightly different. But it could be classed under the same umbrella.

I'd be quite discerning about who it is that I was going to go and see. And I'd interview my hypnotherapist as much as I'd have my hypnotherapist interview me before we agreed to see each other.

The difference between normal hypnotherapy and cognitive hypnotherapy is that, firstly, cognitive hypnotherapy won't work off of scripts. We don't read scripts in front of our clients. We deal with our clients on a case-by-case basis. We have a whole host of different interventions within our toolbox, and we will use whichever intervention we think is most appropriate for that person at that time, given what they're presenting. And we also are short-term solution focused, so we are very reliant upon clients to be as fully committed into the process as we are, so it's sort of a commitment. Both of us, we'll need to be committed to one another in order to sort of attain our goals.

Because your own conscious basically is there to help you, it always has you as an individual in the forefront...and your safety in the forefront of its unconscious mind. But often, our scripts or the unconscious is not in line with where we are as individuals at any given time in our lives, so we might find ourselves practicing some behavioural patterns that might have been effective for us when we were a certain age, but not effective for us at another age. But the unconscious will keep on doing that because it thinks it's keeping you safe. So, hypnosis is a way of shifting the unconscious into a different way, patterned behaviour.

Hypnosis can be really, really effective for anxiety. So, anxiety disorder is pretty prevalent within our society. A lot of people present with anxiety at any given time in their life, during the course of their everyday living, actually. And cognitive hypnotherapy can help people not only deal with their issues of anxiety, but it can also teach them, and give them tools to take home and use for them to be in power to use different forms of self-hypnosis and meditation and breathing exercises, which can help with their general anxiety disorder, if that is indeed what they have.

Sessions will be very, very dependent upon the client and my relationship with the client and what we agreed to do going forward. So it will be dependent upon what they present, what they come to see me for, so whether it be smoking cessation, whether it be anxiety and depression. And I will, from the beginning, do a very thorough and robust history tape with them as well, and I will walk them through what I'm going to do with them, not necessarily in terms of every session, but definitely in terms of what they can expect from me. And I will have expectations of my client as well, so this will be for them to have a commitment, an undertaking to...for their own therapy and to reach their own outcomes as well, decide outcomes.

So, cognitive hypnotherapy is a solution-focussed intervention, so the expectation will be that the client will be coming to me with a set of outcomes that they wish to attain, which we will discuss at the very outset of our consultation meeting. And, with that in mind, it's a client-and-therapist relationship. All therapies are relationships between the client and the therapist, and I will help facilitate what is actually within them to get to their desired outcome.

Hypnotherapy is an approach. It's an intervention, alternative intervention, if you like, that's been used for many, many years that facilitates people, or hypnosis, that uses hypnosis to help people to get into a trance state to communicate better with their unconscious, get rid of their conscious brain that tends to be sometimes presenting challenges. And cognitive hypnotherapy will look at the trance-like states that people work in when they're acting out their habits, the habits that they don't want to have anymore, and will almost use those trance-like states to correct intervention.

I originally worked as a business consultant. I particularly enjoyed the element that was working with people, understanding people, and so I decided to retrain as a psychotherapist. Many of those skills that I learnt and developed within the business world are entirely relevant today as well. And often I do work with businesses and individuals from businesses. And having that understanding helps me to relate to their situations that much more than perhaps the average therapist.
