Smoking cessation therapy explained

Smoking is one of the biggest causes of death and illness in the UK. Stopping smoking can be difficult, many people get trapped in an endless cycle of trying to quit and taking it up again. Smoking is both physical and psychological - it affects both mind and body. Physical and psychological dependence

Nicotine is the addictive substance found in cigarettes; there are two strands to nicotine dependency that make successful quitting so difficult. The physical side is well documented: cravings, irritability, low mood, and lack of concentration. Although these symptoms can feel insurmountable at the time, they peak relatively early and gradually disappear. A psychological dependency can be just as hard to overcome as a physical dependency. We will work with you to uncover and understand your triggers, habits and behaviours. For example, why do you always have a cigarette at the end of a meal? Or do you smoke to calm your nerves, overcome shyness, or even boredom? By understanding these triggers we can increase your success rate of quitting for good.

We take a holistic approach to help you quit smoking. The use of therapy helps to target both the symptoms and the root cause. We know that ‘one size doesn’t fit all’ and that each of our clients is different and has their own set of unique needs and circumstances. We use a combination of therapies for smoking cessation, one of the primary treatments is hypnotherapy.

What is hypnotherapy?

We actually experience hypnosis all the time naturally. Daydreaming is a form of hypnosis, for example. Similarly, when we arrive at a destination in our car without being aware of how we got there. That’s a form of hypnosis too. We drift in and out of the state all the time. All we really do with this form of treatment is harness that state to create a form of deep relaxation that enables us to access parts of the brain that are blocked by conscious thought. By altering your state of consciousness, through the use of hypnosis and positive suggestion, we can help you to change aspects of yourself – for example your behaviour or your feelings.

Using hypnotherapy to quit smoking

Hypnotherapy is very successful as it allows your therapist to bypass the part of your consciousness that craves cigarettes and propose methods to help break the pattern of smoking. Before you take part in stop smoking hypnotherapy, you must be ready to quit smoking – for your own reasons and not for someone else. This proves to be one of the reasons that people relapse back into smoking as they lack the motivation to quit. Your therapist will work with you to change your perspective on the action of smoking and the cigarettes themselves. This can make them smell or taste repelling and you learn techniques to use whenever the urge appears to start smoking again. Stop smoking hypnosis can also be used in tandem with nicotine replacement therapy or similar medication to tackle the psychological and physical aspects of smoking. It is important to remember that stopping smoking may not happen in one session for some people. Long time smokers find it harder to quit, even with hypnotherapy and may require more sessions or follow-up meetings to help keep them from smoking again.

A hypnotherapy for smoking cessation case study

Jim had been smoking about 40 cigarettes per day for more than 20 years and was quite sceptical about hypnotherapy to start with. However, he was very keen to stop smoking due to the impending arrival of his first grandchild. He had tried various methods with limited success. He came in for one 2-hour session which consisted of a discussion about his typical smoking habits followed by a tailored hypnosis session which took into account his scepticism, as well as his specific smoking habits and aspirations. Jim was also provided with both a hypnosis CD to take home and an individual action plan of practical strategies and advice. Jim has now been a non-smoker for over two years and reports no withdrawal symptoms or weight gain.

Our smoking cessation therapy sessions are tailored to suit your needs. Each session usually lasts from 30 minutes to an hour; and our courses usually consist of around 6 to 12 sessions.
