What is psychotherapy counselling?
Psychotherapy is the collective term for a number of therapies that help treat emotional and mental health issues. There are many types of psychotherapy, most of which use one-on-one or group spoken conversation as their basis.
Some therapies are based in other forms of communication such as the written word, art, music and dramatisation.
Treatment of everyday problems is more often referred to as counselling. However, the term counselling is sometimes used interchangeably with “psychotherapy”.
How does psychotherapy help?
During therapy, you might learn about your moods, feelings, thoughts and behaviours, which can give us insights as to how you can better respond to life’s challenges and increase your sense of wellbeing.
To do this, we employ a range of techniques based on relationship-building, communication and changes to behaviour, all of which are designed to support your mental health, or to have better group relationships (such as in a family or a couple).
The most common therapies that we offer are:
● Cognitive analytical therapy
● Psychodynamic psychotherapy
● Interpersonal psychotherapy
● Family and systemic therapy (including couples therapy)
● Humanistic therapies
● Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
“If you’re aware that you keep experiencing similar patterns of behaviour or experience, then psychotherapy is a great way to explore the root causes and gain better self-understanding.”
Richard Reid – CEO, Therapist & Coaching Psychologist
What can you expect from a psychotherapy session?
The most important way to build a trusting relationship with your psychotherapist is through trust, as this helps you feel that you are able and open to discuss deep-seated problems.
All our psychologists abide by doctor-patient confidentiality – you can trust us completely. In the short term we offer you a totally safe place to work through what you need to work through. In the long term we look at what is possible for each of our clients.
Clinic-based psychotherapy therapy sessions
We will tailor the sessions to meet your individual needs. Each session usually lasts from 30 minutes to an hour; and we usually recommend a course of around 6 to 12 sessions.
