What is mental health coaching?

In the same way that everyone has physical health, everyone has mental health. And in the same way that we can all feel physically below our best, or even sick, from time to time, that also goes for our mental health. Poor mental health can severely impact your work and home life. Knowing how to look after ourselves is important. We all need to take personal responsibility for our own mental wellbeing. And where possible, look out for others too. There are many people out there that perhaps do not understand mental health; and their views, feelings or judgments, can make it difficult for those suffering from mental health to seek the professional help they may need.

Normalising mental health issues

There is still a great deal of stigma around mental health, and around talking about mental health. Sadly, stigmatising and discriminatory treatment can be upsetting for the person experiencing the illness, which can lead to additional issues such as low confidence and low self-esteem. Our mental health coaching aims to reduce, and ultimately remove, this stigma by giving you the confidence to have positive and constructive conversations with others, especially those close to you, about how you feel.

How does this course help?

Many of us don’t even know what good mental health looks like, or how to help those who are struggling. This course focuses on understanding your own mental health, inside and outside the workplace. It is designed to teach people how to promote good mental wellbeing and assist others to do the same, in the right situations. Through a deeper understanding and awareness of mental health issues, from stress to depression, you’ll be able to help yourself and others in a practical and supportive way.

It’s OK to not feel OK

As humans we need to accept that not every day is perfect. Sometimes things will go wrong and we will make mistakes or other people may be unpleasant towards us. Learning how we handle our emotions, stay resilient and remain true to ourselves is key but so is accepting that it’s OK to not feel OK. By taking personal responsibility for your own mental health and knowing when to seek help will improve both your mental health and overall wellbeing. Many factors can affect your mental health, one being stress. Stress can cause you to feel depressed, anxious, angry, sad, guilty or any other unwanted emotion as well taking a toll on you physically. Think of stress as a bucket, as you experience stress your bucket slowly fills up. Your bucket is your capacity to deal with stress and if you don’t know how to open the tap and ignore the stress signals your stress levels will keep rising until you can no longer cope. Our course can teach you how to reduce your stress levels before they overflow.
"When we talk about the idea of mental health, we often focus on the more serious psychological issues. However, all of us have a relationship with mental health in the same way that we have a relationship with physical fitness. This is constantly changing. Being informed and aware, allows us to be more proactive about maintaining and improving both our own and other people's wellbeing; meaning that not only are we less likely to encounter more serious psychological issues, but we are also more likely to address emerging themes at an earlier stage and within a more supportive environment with less stigma."
