Menopause is when your periods stop due to a drop in the levels of a hormone called oestrogen. It generally affects women between the ages of 45 – 55 years old, but the average age is 51. It can occur earlier for some women and may be the result of medical treatments or surgery. However, everyone will experience menopause differently.
Perimenopause is the period leading up to menopause. This can start anywhere from late twenties to late forties. This is when oestrogen levels start to change and ends when you reach menopause. That means you can be experiencing the symptoms of menopause, but your periods will not have stopped. You’ll reach menopause when you have not had a period for 12 months.
Menopause and perimenopause will feel different for every woman. It is important to note that whilst mainly women will be affected by perimenopause and menopause, the symptoms can be experienced by people who are trans, non-binary, or intersex due to hormone treatments or the withdrawal of hormone treatments.
