Menopause wellbeing therapy and counselling

Firstly a couple of helpful definitions.
  • Menopause is when your periods stop due to a drop in the levels of a hormone called oestrogen. It generally affects women between the ages of 45 – 55 years old, the average age is 51. It can occur earlier for some women and may be the result of medical treatments or surgery. Everyone will experience menopause differently.
  • Perimenopause is the period leading up to menopause. This can start anywhere from late twenties to late forties. It is when oestrogen levels start to change and ends when you reach menopause. You can be experiencing the symptoms of menopause, but your periods will not have stopped. Perimenopause ends and you reach menopause when you have not had a period for 12 months.

Menopause - a taboo subject?

Menopause has long been considered a taboo subject; something that is dismissed, not openly discussed. Thankfully, attitudes are changing, and menopause is now being taken seriously by employees, the medical profession, and society in general. Women are finding their voice. This demystifying and educating is key to creating acceptance and understanding around a medical issue that eventually affects every woman.  The menopause can have a negative impact on work and home life as well as personal and professional relationships. It can impact your physical and mental health from fluctuating hormones to increased anxiety and depression, brain fog to poor sleep, painful joints, and weight gain amongst many other symptoms.

Recognising the main symptoms of the menopause

Menopause and perimenopause can cause symptoms like anxiety, mood swings, brain fog, hot flushes, and irregular periods. It will feel different for every woman – you may have a number of symptoms or none. These symptoms can start years before your periods stop and carry on afterwards.  It is important to note that whilst mainly women will be affected by perimenopause and menopause, the symptoms can be experienced by people who are trans, non-binary, or intersex due to hormone treatments or the withdrawal of hormone treatments.  We understand that everyone is different and has their own unique set of circumstances. That is why we tailor our treatment to suit your needs. As well as working with your therapist we also suggest contacting your doctor, they will be able to advise you on medicines to replace the missing hormones and relieve any physical symptoms.  Symptoms can include
  • A change to your periods; they may become irregular or be particularly heavy.
  • Changes to your mood; low mood, anxiety, mood swings, low self-esteem
  • Problems with memory, often referred to as ‘brain fog’.
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches and migraines worse than usual
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Hot (and cold) flushes affecting your face, neck, and chest.
  • Palpitations
  • Trouble sleeping, leaving you tired during the day.
  • Change in body shape and weight gain.
  • Dry and itchy skin
  • Reduced sex drive, vaginal dryness and pain or discomfort during sex
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections

Our approach

We approach each client with a fresh, open approach. Each woman we see exhibits a different combination of symptoms and needs support in a way that works for them and their specific situation. We will help you to acknowledge and accept the symptoms you are experiencing and create a workable plan where you have the tools you need to cope with anything perimenopause and menopause throws at you.  We use a range of therapies including hypnotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT),and talking therapies such as psychotherapy and counselling techniques.  How can I help myself? As well as working with a therapist, there are a number of lifestyle changes you might want to consider. These coupled with a healthy diet and regular exercise form an important part of your menopausal toolkit. These include:
  • Exercising regularly (specifically weight-bearing activities)
  • Relaxing pastimes such as yoga and meditation
  • Eating a calcium-rich diet
  • Get plenty of rest and establish a regular sleep routine.
