Menopause therapy

Recognise, understand and positively minimise the impact of menopause.

What is menopause?

Menopause is when your periods stop due to a drop in the levels of a hormone called oestrogen. It generally affects women between the ages of 45 55 years old, but the average age is 51. It can occur earlier for some women and may be the result of medical treatments or surgery. However, everyone will experience menopause differently.

Perimenopause is the period leading up to menopause. This can start anywhere from late twenties to late forties. This is when oestrogen levels start to change and ends when you reach menopause. That means you can be experiencing the symptoms of menopause, but your periods will not have stopped. You’ll reach menopause when you have not had a period for 12 months.

Menopause - a taboo subject?

Menopause has long been considered a taboo subject; something that is dismissed, not openly discussed. Thankfully, attitudes are changing, and menopause is now being taken seriously by employees, the medical profession, and society in general. Women are finding their voice. This demystifying and educating is key to creating acceptance and understanding around a medical issue that eventually affects every woman.  The menopause can have a negative impact on work and home life as well as personal and professional relationships. It can impact your physical and mental health from fluctuating hormones to increased anxiety and depression, brain fog to poor sleep, painful joints, and weight gain amongst many other symptoms.

Main symptoms of menopause

Menopause and perimenopause will feel different for every woman. It is important to note that whilst mainly women will be affected by perimenopause and menopause, the symptoms can be experienced by people who are trans, non-binary, or intersex due to hormone treatments or the withdrawal of hormone treatments.

Symptoms can include

  • A change to your periods, becoming irregular or particularly heavy
  • Changes to your mood such as anxiety, mood swings, and low self-esteem
  • Problems with memory, often referred to as brain fog’.
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches and migraines worse than usual
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Hot (and cold) flushes affect your face, neck, and chest.
  • Palpitations
  • Trouble sleeping, leaving you tired during the day
  • Change in body shape and weight gain
  • Dry and itchy skin
  • Reduced sex drive, vaginal dryness and pain or discomfort during sex
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections

How can I help myself?

As well as working with a therapist, there are a number of lifestyle changes you might want to consider. These coupled with a healthy diet and regular exercise form an important part of your menopausal toolkit.

These include:

  • Exercising regularly (specifically weight-bearing activities)
  • Relaxing pastimes such as yoga and meditation
  • Eating a calcium-rich diet
  • Getting plenty of rest and establish a regular sleep routine.
