What is play therapy?

Like its companion treatment art therapy, play therapy lends itself to treating smaller children, because their cognitive ability isn’t yet at the right level to be able to benefit from counselling. If you don’t have the words to describe how you feel, this can be a really helpful form of therapy. Our certified play therapists use everyday items like toys or sand to help children reframe what is going on in a way that makes sense for them. The toys become a way to talk about what is happening, and help them to externalise their world.

“Play therapy is really effective in helping younger children who lack the emotional literacy to articulate how they feel. It gives us a way to frame what’s going on in their heads and play it out in front of us.” Richard Reid – CEO, Therapist & Coaching Psychologist

How can our play therapy services help?

It eases children into therapy, particularly those who might have been through a tough set of circumstances. Play therapy is particularly good for helping with trauma, as well as with issues in the family like anxiety and depression. We also use creative writing as a tool if we think that will help address an issue from a safe distance. We create stories around our experiences, and creative writing can be a way to reframe what’s happening to us and see it from a different angle.
